With their official color of orange, the first Syracuse University football teams in the 1890s were called “The Orioles.” Somehow, it flew the coop, along with Hillmen, Bill Orange’s Men and, now, Orangemen. The Orange as a reference to sports teams has been consistently used since the color was officially adopted.
