If the electrode protrudes too far, it can strike the piston. If it’s too short, it can cause misfires. If the thread doesn’t match perfectly, it can damage the threads in the cylinder head, become cross-threaded or seized. If the plug is overtightened, it can strip out the cylinder head threads.
