The allusion is that the father is Billy Costigan (DiCaprio), with whom she had an affair, and not Sullivan, who is impotent. At the end, Sullivan confronts mobster Frank Costello (Nicholson) on the possibility of betrayal. Costello tells Sullivan that he hasn’t ratted him out and that, in fact, Sullivan is like a son.
