The majority of algae in Lake Lanier is non filamentous nontoxic algae species. This means even at higher levels it does not create a mat on the water but can be seen as a green tint in the water. We monitor algae levels by measuring levels of Chlorophyll a, a pigment contained in plants, algae, and cyanobacteria.
